An inferno in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11, gutted three auto part shops and a cold store on the Kamara-Mamprobi stretch in Accra.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire is believed to have started over a faulty electrical system in one of the shops, which led to the flames spreading to adjourning shops.

In his narration to Channel One news, Divisional Officer 3 in charge of operations at the Dansoman Fire station, William Sackey, said that upon arrival at the scene, the fire team noticed that the main service wire close to the shops was giving off electrical shocks and had to call for backup in order to contain the fire.

He added that a police backup was sought after the crowd tried impeding the team’s work.

“So this morning around 5.45 am, we received a distress call that there was a fire at Kamara near the Apostolic Church. So our men were dispatched to the fire scene and on arrival, we observed that three containers were on fire amidst electrical shock from the main service wire.

“So quickly our men got to work and in the process, we had to call for backup from our Circle Fire Station to come and make additional pumps at the incident scene.

“We also noticed that the teeming crowd was going to create a little bit of problem for us so we called for police backup. So at just around 8.45 am, we managed to bring the fire under control.”

DO3 Sackey further assured that investigations are currently underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.
