Members of University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, and their counterparts from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s Katanga Hall, clashed today [Monday], leaving one person injured.
The clash occurred moments before an inter-hall debate that was expected to take place at the University of Ghana between the two halls.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, a UG student with the University’s radio station, Radio Univers, Emmanuel Dzivenu, told Umaru Sanda that, but for the timely intervention of officers from the Legon Police Command and security guards, the clash would have been nastier.
According to Mr. Emmanuel Dzivenu, just when the debate was about to start, news emerged of a video that had gone viral on social media, in which a man believed to be a member of Commonwealth Hall, was being molested by another person believed to be a member of Katanga Hall.
“When this video got to members of Commonwealth Hall, they got infuriated and descended from the hills to Mensah Sabah Hall to rescue their colleague who was in the custody of Katanga Boys.”
Dzivenu added that “when [Commonwealth Hall], were descending down, they were met with resistance from members of the Mensah Sabah Hall who are affiliated to Katanga Hall, so Katanga Hall were lodging there for the debate to start. That was when the clashes occurred, but for the timely intervention of the Ghana Police Service and the Legon Security, they were able to calm nerves down.”
“As at 4:30pm, about 10 people were arrested, and only one person was injured and is receiving treatment at the Legon Hospital.”
Dzivenu says there’s uneasy calm, as there are concerns that there could be reprisal attacks in the absence of security personnel.
According to Dzivenu, there are reports that some of the Katanga members have fled the scene to avoid police arrest.
It is unclear whether the debate will still go ahead, considering the turn of events.
