Voting has finally commenced in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regional executive elections in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The polls which were scheduled to start at 9 am on Sunday, began several hours later because of disagreements over an injunction secured on the elections by the Atebubu Amantin Constituency branch of the NPP.
The Atebubu Amantin NPP had secured an injunction on the polls, pending a court hearing on the constituency’s disputed elections.
The Electoral Commission officers did not show up to the venue, having been served with the injunction. Despite the EC’s absence, the NPP improvised by using plastic containers and cardboard boxes as makeshift ballot boxes.
This marked a departure from the conventional sealed ballot boxes and private voting booths provided by the EC.
After negotiations, all parties agreed to continue with the vote.
The party then constituted an election body, comprising the election committee and Constituency chairmen to supervise the exercise with a lawyer, Alfred Tuah Yeboah, serving as the Returning officer.
This move by the Congress did not go down well with the MP for Sunyani East, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, who urged the party to follow due process.
Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh maintained that elections of this nature must be supervised by the EC.
He reiterated to that the Congress that, per the party’s regulations, “the election shall be conducted by the Electoral Commission.”
