Residents living around the Adabraka market in Accra have complained about the insanitary conditions in the area resulting from the activities of plastic bottle collecters popularly known as ‘koliba boys’.
They have complained about the increased number of mosquitoes leading to frequent cases of malaria, and the presence of dangerous reptiles due to the heaps of dirty bottles that litter the area.
Some of these ‘koliba boys’ keep their bottles near the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) transformers which serve the community, which could be potentially hazardous to themselves and passers-by.
According to the residents, officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) came to the area during the recent National Sanitation Day exercise but only promised to return and ensure that the issue is tackled but nothing has been done since then.
A resident whose shop is sited close to the dumping site of the dirty bottles told Citi News, that “we have to treat ourselves for malaria every month as a result of the waste, which is a breeding place for mosquitoes.”
She therefore called on the AMA to clear the heaps of used bottles in the area as soon as possible to improve sanitation there.
