A blood donation exercise will be held tomorrow [Saturday] with the aim of collecting hundreds of voluntary pints of blood to stock the country’s Blood bank to save lives.
Managers of the blood bank have decried the low level of blood in store, and have called for more voluntary donations.
[contextly_sidebar id=”UFAoIzDq5beR2V9CloNkmK4eWAECKIox”]The exercise, is being organized by a social activist group called the Economic Fighters League, in collaboration with the National Blood Service.
It will take place at the National Blood Service Secretariat, adjacent GCB Bank, behind Fire Service, Korle-Bu, from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
“In response to this and as part of our revolutionary duty, Economic Fighters League is organizing an emergency blood donation exercise in collaboration with the National Blood Service. We call on all Ghanaians to come out in their numbers for this noble national duty,” the organizers said in a statement.
The National Blood Service, Ghana (NBSG), has complained that it was unable to reach its 50 percent target of Voluntary Unpaid Blood Donation across the country in 2017.
Dr. Justina K Ansah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NBSG, at a recent forum said: “We need only one percent of the population of Ghana to voluntarily donate on regular basis, and the NBSG would be able to collect sustainable blood stock in all the types to save lives.”
The organizers of Saturday’s blood donation exercise said, the “blood collection takes about five to seven minutes, after which the donor is made to rest for 10 minutes and given light refreshment” adding that “the donor will be able to return to his or her normal duties immediately after donating.”
