A former President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, has hailed Ghana for leading the effort to free Africa from the shackles of Western colonialism.
He believes that Ghana led the way for the vision of the struggle for Africa’s liberation from colonialism.
Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires extolled Ghana at the University for Development Studies (UDS) Tamale City campus, Dungu, where he presented a paper on the vision of the struggle for Liberation from Colonialism.
He is the Guest Speaker for the UDS 6th African Leadership Lecture series scheduled for three days.
The former Cape Verde leader commended the role of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in setting the pace for the liberation of African states as well as the African unity agenda.
According to him, Ghana’s pioneering role in liberating Africa from colonialism encouraged Portuguese colonies including Cape Verde to begin their fight against colonialism.
He saluted former South African President, Nelson Mandela, and other African colonialism liberators for their selfless struggle.
Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires is to spend the next two days discussing the building of sovereign States and the African challenges.
He earlier at a media encounter entreated African leaders to stop the rhetoric and remain committed to the African Union (AU).
In his estimation, strengthening the African Union is the panacea to reduce the continent’s financial dependency on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Pedro Verona Rodriques Pires advocated the need to build strong States in Africa where institutions fulfil their obligations.
He condemned nepotism which he agreed was gradually killing the framework of good governance in Africa.
The University for Development Studies (UDS) in 2012 initiated the African Leadership Lectures to create the opportunity for past African Heads of States to speak on issues affecting the continent’s growth.
Since its inception, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Festus Mogae of Botswana, Joaquim Alberto Chissano of Mozambique and Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba of Namibia have honoured the invitations.
They dealt with topics such as the evolution of the strong visionary leadership of the front line states and its contribution to the liberation struggle in Southern Africa, Reflection on leadership, good governance and development in Africa, leadership and conflict resolution in Africa.
