President Akufo-Addo has told anti-corruption agencies that the fight against corruption in the country will fail without their assistance.

According to him, government’s efforts alone will not be adequate to deal with the canker which has plagued the country’s public sector for many years.

The President, who was speaking at a meeting with members of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, said corruption should be a matter of concern to all Ghanaians.

“[Corruption] is a national concern to all of us. Not only about the reality but also the perception about the fight against corruption because in many ways, the perception is as significant as the reality. We are working in these areas and [want] your input as to how best authorities can forge their weapons to fight against corruption.” he said.

The issue of corruption in Ghana recently dominated headlines as Ghana dropped from 70 to 81 in the 2017 corruption perception index put together by Transparency International.

While the government and the opposition had been engaged in a back and forth over who to blame for the dip, some analysts have insisted that the government must urgently pass the Right to Information (RTI) Bill to ensure proper accountability and minimize the possibility of corruption in the public sector.

Pass RTI bill to help fight against corruption- US Ambassador

Mr. Robert Jackson, United States Ambassador to Ghana, in a public address in January 2018, urged the government to urgently pass the Right to Information Bill (RTI) to show that the country is truly serious about press freedom and fighting corruption.
