The newly-elected Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Namoo, has threatened to sue some of his opponents in the just ended regional conference held in Bolgatanga for what he describes as defamatory statements made against him during his campaign.
Mr. Namoo, who is a legal practitioner, however failed to mention the names of those he intends to take legal action against.
[contextly_sidebar id=”EJliE9EidETFx5EAc7jTgsdHzHfewKe3″]He indicated that his image as a lawyer has been dented by these defamatory comments, adding that he will only consider rescinding his decision after the comments are retracted and an apology offered by the alleged offenders.
“Never in the history of this party in the region have there been several defamatory allegations against candidates in an election. But the result shows that the truth will always stand, as the motto of Commonwealth says. I am sure the people would know, next time around, that it doesn’t pay to go on the negative against a party member,” he said.
“Some of the statements are so defamatory that I, as a lawyer, based on the attack on my professional integrity, would have no choice but to get my lawyer to write a letter to some of them for retraction and if possible a court action. Otherwise, my ‘respect’ as a lawyer is under threat because of some of the defamatory statements that were made.”
Anthony Namoo beat the incumbent Chairman, Mohammed Murtala Ibrahim by 73 votes.
In all, 303 delegates cast their ballot at the GNAT conference hall in Bolgatanga, choosing the best out of 51 candidates aspiring for 10 executive positions.
