Scores of canoes and boats at the Sekondi fishing harbour in the Western Region, have been destroyed following Tuesday night’s stormy winds that swept through the harbour.
Over 25 canoes and 10 boats have been broken down as well as generators, outboard motors and fishing gears.
The winds, which started at about 5:00 am on Tuesday, pushed many of the canoes from afar towards the boats, which had docked at the harbour.
Some fishermen who were busily sifting through the wreckage for anything they could recoup, told Citi News the damage will cost them several thousands of cedis.
“For me, my canoe is wrecked, wooden parts are ripped apart. The outboard motor fell off into the sea, the net is messed up, my generator is destroyed beyond repairs. The cost of this runs into millions of cedis,” one fisherman told Citi News.
One of the operators of a capsized canoe said “I woke up during the winds to check the whether to see if everything was fine with my vessel. Unfortunately, when I came, the wind was so powerful that I couldn’t do anything about it. The rope holding it to the beam there had been torn apart, and the boat itself was capsizing. I couldn’t do anything. The cost to me is what I’m going to think about now”.
The winds also took down some trees in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis and the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality.
Tree branches blocked some roads whiles some billboards were taken down. There had been similar rains and severe winds in Accra on Tuesday dawn.
