The Yendi Township in the Northern Region has again been hit hard by a recurring water crisis compelling some residents to drink contaminated water from the same source with animals.
Those within the main business Township are currently depending on a few mechanized boreholes that are almost dried up.
The situation has compelled majority of basic school pupils to abandon the classrooms in search of water for domestic use.
Water Tanker service providers have adjusted their prices making it extremely difficult for residents to afford.
The Dagbon Forum, Yendi chapter on Thursday held a workshop in Yendi which brought together stakeholders to brainstorm and proffer solutions to the dire situation.
The Forum’s President, Mohammed Ibrahim Babatu, in a Citi News interview decried the situation and pleaded with government to fix the problem.
According to him, the Yendi water treatment plant built in 1953 has since not seen any major rehabilitation works.
He said the Yendi Municipality with about 281 communities rely on the River Dakar as its major source of water supply which is almost dried up.
He said the Dagbon Forum, Yendi chapter, will continue to pile pressure on government to address the problem.
Mohammed Ibrahim Babatu appealed to Non Governmental Organizations and development partners to construct more mechanized boreholes in the area.
Some concerned citizens of Yendi Municipality including the Northern Regional Coordinating Council’s (NRCC) Accountant, Baba Danei, Farouk Aliu Mahama and Abiba Mahama, pledged their support to help solve the problem.
Whiles Farouk Aliu Mahama issued a GHs10,000 cheque, Baba Danei promised to help dredge the River Dakar.
