As part of its effort to create awareness of autism, the 2018 Radford University College (RUC) Graduate Fashion show featured some children suffering from the mental condition.
The event held at the plush Kempiski Hotel in Accra to showcase the creative designs of its graduating students saw autistic children modeling clothes by a graduating student, Cynthia Agbley.
Her motivation, Cynthia explained, is to encourage parents of autistic children that all hope is not lost.
Austism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.
Cynthia Agbley called for more sensitization on autism to combat the stigma that is associated with the condition.
The Radford Graduate Fashion Show is an excellent platform for the promotion of new talent, showcasing the work of the college’s best fashion and graphic design graduates.
The event saw graduates from the Fashion and Design Department of the University showing their latest collections and designs.
Samples of their designs were modelled to the admiration of guests who gathered at the university’s premises for the event.
It ranges from corporate, casual and African wear, to wedding gowns innovatively designed with colourful fabrics.
Speaking at the sidelines of the event, Chairman of Radford University College, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong said the annual fashion show is a way of demonstrating their talents and readiness for the job market.
He underscored the need for government to invest heavily in the fashion industry by ensuring all public and civil servants always wear African fabrics to work.
The Radford University Chairman noted that a vibrant fashion industry is a panacea to ending the increasing graduate unemployment in the country.
Nana Dwomoh Sarpong said investment in the industry is an avenue for job opportunities and help to position Ghana on the global fashion platform.
Radford University is the premier university to offer a degree course in fashion design. It has made fashion-design an integral part of its curricula.
