The Ghana Health Service (GHS) Governing Council had a working visit to the Volta Region from May 13.
The visit forms part of the Council’s initiative to get close to the service delivery point to appreciate the challenges of the management, staff and patients for redress.
The nationwide tour commenced with a maiden visit to the Eastern Region in early January 2018, following Central Region, March 26.
The Council visited the Hohoe Municipal Hospital, Alavanyo Dzegbedze CHPS compound, Dzolu Gborgame Health Centre, and Volta Regional Hospital.
Among concerns raised by the management and staff in the region were the lack of staff accommodation, bad roads to health facilities, inadequate staffing, and lack of ambulance vehicles.
The Council commended the new Regional Health Director, Dr Timothy Letsa and the health workers in the region, especially staff of Hohoe Municipal Hospital and Alavanyo Dzegbedze CHPS compound, for their commitment towards service delivery and the drastic reduction in institutional maternal mortality rate in the region.
The Chairman of the Council, Dr Yao Yeboah appealed to health workers in the region to ensure customer care, good interpersonal relationships with the patients.
He encouraged them to focus much on effective primary health care /preventive health care service delivery.
The Director-General of GHS, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare assured the staff that measures are in place to address the accommodation, staffing and ambulance service issues.
He indicated that continuous quality improvement should be a key to providing cost-effective and efficient services.
He advised health facility management to use Internally Generated Funds (IGF) efficiently and judiciously.
The Director-General also appealed to the community leaders in Alavanyo and Nkonya, and other stakeholders to help address the existing conflict, to ensure the safety of healthcare providers in these communities.
