The Multimedia Group has expressed its gratitude to Citi FM for the support given in the wake of recent assault of two of its reporters.
The parent company of Joy FM and Adom FM, in a letter to Citi FM’s Management said “the management of The Multimedia Group has taken note of the unique support you have given us since our journalist, Latif Iddriss, was assaulted at the Police Headquarters on the 27th of March, and especially, following the battery of our reporter, Charity Sakyiwaa Ahwenepa on the 4th of May.
“It is the conviction of Management of Multimedia that with this kind of solidarity among us, industry players, the needless attacks on media practitioners – a barbaric culture threating this nation’s hard-earned reputation for a free press – can be successfully fought and defeated,” the letter added.
The most recent assault, of Charity Sakyiwaa Ahwenepa at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) headquarters, prompted Citi FM’s Director of News Programming of, Bernard Avle, to threaten to boycott all NPP events if the party did not condemn the woman who assaulted the Adom FM reporter, Hajia Fati.
“If we don’t hear from the NPP within a week on the assault on the Adom FM reporter, we at Citi 97.3 will not cover that political party again…We will not cover their events; we will not interview them. John Boadu, you know what to do.”
Shortly after that, the NPP released a statement condemning the incident.
The reporter said she tried to take some photos when she was slapped in the face by Hajia Fati.
The NPP was widely condemned for its silence, following which it finally condemned Hajia Fati for her actions and said it was conducting its investigation into the matter.
Hajia Fati eventually apologised for her actions, though she did not make mention of the reporter she assaulted.
The Multimedia Group told Citi News earlier that it was still waiting on an official communication from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the apology.
The company filed a complaint with the police over the matter, which is being investigated.
