Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has tasked his constituents and residents within the Kumasi metropolis to take sanitation issues seriously.
He said good sanitation plays a crucial role in the development of any country, hence the need for citizens to play their roles in that regard.
He emphasized that ailments in most communities of the country can be attributed to poor sanitation practices by some members of the general public.
He said Ghana cannot continue to lose its teeming workforce to deaths that can be prevented as a result of diseases that emanate from insanitary conditions.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh made the call when he led hundreds of his constituents to clean suburbs of the Kumasi metropolis including Ashtown, Aheneboboano and the Manhyia Palace.
Participants, including the MP, cleaned the streets, desilted choked gutters and also collected the filth which was later disposed by a waste truck at the landfill site.
The MP said the cleanup exercise was also to commemorate the 19 years of the coronation of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool and the Birthday of the King.
He indicated that it was the personal responsibility of every member of the general public to ensure they keep their surroundings clean and eschew bad sanitary practices.
“If each and every one is well-informed and well-educated about being responsible for the personal environment, the society will be clean”, he maintained.
He further said his office will collaborate with city authorities as well as the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to provide waste-bins within the constituency to improve sanitation.
He also expressed concern about the over-reliance on plastic by the public in their day to day activities.
