A former Minister for Gender and a human rights’ activist, Nana Oye Lithur, has called for the prosecution of former Gambian President Yaya Jammeh over the murder of some 44 Ghanaians during his tenure.
Further to this Nana Oye Lithur is appealing to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, to as a matter of urgency institute an investigation into the gruesome killing of those 44 Ghanaians in the Gambia over a decade ago.

“We want ex-president Yaya Jammeh to be prosecuted and punished for murdering and killing innocent Africans who were seeking greener pasture, let’s all come together and let’s plead and urge his excellency Nana Akufo Addo to take this matter up,” she said.
In February 2005 over forty-four (44) Ghanaians who were making their journey to seek greener pastures were stopped when the enter the Gambian water territorial water.
They were arrested and charges of attempting to topple Yahya Jammeh, as President.
These Ghanaians were tortured and killed by order of Yahya Jammeh who had just been president through a bloody coup that brought him to power.
Now the only known survive Martin Kyere, who was a key witness in mass killing in the killing of 56 migrants who were mistaken for coup plotters in the Gambia is leading a campaign to bring Yahya Jammeh to justice.
“The beating started in the vessel; when we got down from the vessel, a soldier was holding a long cutlass, he put the cutlass on your chest and tear it, we were sent to the police station, they took our fingerprints, we stayed in a cell with no food. As we were being transported to the forest I managed to let my hands loose from the rope it was tied with, I jumped from the pickup and started running, while I was running for my life, all I could hear was gunshot and screams,” he said.
