President Akufo-Addo has today [Wednesday] cut the sod for the commencement of phase two of the Kumasi Airport Project.
The 66,035,000 euros project is expected to be completed in 24months.
[contextly_sidebar id=”OV0VNTl3XX7w9Uxic5nnfKiIpQrED0oL”]The second phase will see an extension of the current length of the runway from 1981metres to 2300metres, a new terminal building that will accommodate 1million passengers per year and an Apron Area.
The President revealed that funding for the project had been secured emphasising that “there should be no excuse for any delays by contractors.”
The project according to the President will give Kumasi the “much-needed impetus to reinforce its position as an important commercial and transformational centre in Ghana and West Africa.”
The Minister of Aviation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah who was excited about the sod-cutting ceremony said the project fulfils government’s vision of making Airports in the country aviation hubs for international and regional airlines.
Plans have been put in place for the “attainment of attractive infrastructure” once the “much awaited-for Kumasi Airport project” completes.
President Mahama cut the sod for the same project two years ago.
The project was awarded to Contracta Engenhiria Ltd, the company that constructed the new Kumasi Central Market
It is unclear why President Akufo – Addo is repeating the sod cutting today but a member of the minority side in Parliament who is ranking member of the Transport Committee, Kwame Agbodza told Citi News that today’s ceremony is a waste of time.
“President Mahama did cut sod for this project somewhere around 5th December 2016. Indeed you are also aware that parliament did complete work in terms of financing contract for this project before the 2016 election. The need to do another sod cutting today in Kumasi can only be born out of propaganda because as far as I am aware, there is no need.”
