Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Evelyn Ama Kumi Richardson has assured residents of government’s commitment to improving their living standards.
She therefore, called for collaboration from residents, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Development Partners in the execution of the assembly’s mandate in providing the socio-economic needs of residents.
The MCE made the call at the commissioning and handing over of a modern slaughterhouse facility equipped with changing rooms, a wash- room, hooks for hanging slaughtered animals, slabs and offices at Asuakwaa constructed by the Sunyani Municipal Assembly with support from Urban Development Grant (UDG) to serve Sunyani and its surrounding communities.
The commissioning of the facility will impact positively on the lives of residents who have to endure the services of butchers operating from an old dilapidated slaughterhouse situated at the Bosoma Market with inadequate facilities where animals are slaughtered on the floor.
The new edifice after its completion was left to rot after its initial commissioning due to a misunderstanding between the butchers and city authorities over its location.
The butchers subsequently refused to use the facility, citing the poor nature of the roads leading to the area, lack of toilet facility among others as reasons for their refusal to operationalise the facility.
But Mrs Kumi Richardson held series of meetings with the butchers to discuss and find an amicable solution to the impasse. Both parties came to an agreement and the necessary facilities were provided.
Addressing residents, the MCE reiterated government’s commitment to improving on the security situation in the country to enable residents to conduct their duties freely.
“The construction of the facility was started in 2007, continued by my predecessor and commissioned but due to a misunderstanding, it was not used. But realizing the importance of the facility to residents, we came to an understanding and today, the butchers, residents and the assembly is celebrating this success story. It’s a victory for all of us and an opportunity for job creation and development”, she said.
The Chief butcher of Sunyani, Alhaji Gausu Abdulai commended the government for listening to their concerns and pledged to work diligently to ensure the facility generates money to boost the assembly’s work.
He assured the facility will be used for its intended purpose.
The Municipal Chief Executive later commissioned a police station at Atronie.
