The Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mrs Evelyn Ama Kumi-Richardson, has presented equipment worth GHc 162,736 to some physically challenged persons in the area to enable them to engage in productive activities to improve their living standards.
A total of 97 applicants benefitted from various support schemes and packages which included Drugs, Assisting Devices, Deep freezers, Sewing Machines, Knitting Machines and Tools to empower and assist them to venture into various trade and businesses.
This, according to the MCE, is a demonstration of government’s commitment to empowering every Ghanaian to contribute to socio-economic development of the country.
Mrs. Ama Kumi-Richardson, who made these known at a presentation ceremony in Sunyani, said it was the government’s desire to financially assist persons with disability with tools and to improve their personal welfare.
“We are all one people and therefore should not discriminate against each other. This is to empower and help you create a means of income for yourself, so you don’t depend on others or beg for alms”, she opined.
She charged the beneficiaries to put the support to good use for the benefit of society.
The Municipal Social Welfare and Community Development Director, Thomas Tornu, disclosed funds for the project was from their three percent share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and urged the beneficiaries to use the facility for its intended purpose.
The President of the Federation of Persons with Disability in the municipality, Fatawu Fuseini, commended the government and assured the items will be used efficiently to benefit society.
