The Minister of Tourism and Culture, Mrs Catherine Afeku has said her outfit will soon set up an automated revenue collection system at Wli Water Falls in Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region as part of the measures to restructure the facility and generate enough revenue for development.
The Minister, who bemoaned the situation where revenues generated from tourist sites are not put into good use, said the government, as part of public financial reforms, will introduce the electronic transactions at the various tourist reception centres in the country.
The restructuring at the Wli Falls, according to Mrs Afeku, will include deployment of personnel under Revenue and Digital Ghana Units of the Nation Builders’ Corps to the facility to help effectively manage revenues as well expand the infrastructure in the area.
She, therefore, called on the chiefs and people of the area to support the concept and ensure its successful rollout.
The Minister was speaking during a familiarity tour of some tourist sites in the Volta Region.
Wli Falls is the highest waterfall in West Africa. It is a major source of revenue for the community and government, recording a daily average of about 500 tourists to the site.
The community on their part welcomed the initiative and pledged their support.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has deployed some celebrities in Ghana’s showbiz industry to the region to help promote the tourism potentials of the region through social media.
The celebrities, including actor Van Vicker, Highlife Musician Lucky Mensah and Rapper Edem are to leverage on their social media presence to promote the sites in the region.
The group has been spending the better part of the weekend together with the sector Minister, Mrs. Catharine Afeku visiting some attractive places in the region.
Mrs Afeku in an interview with Citi News said new media plays a significant role in tourism and entertainment, adding that celebrities with their large followers can help shape thoughts on the importance of the sites.
