Academic City College, a state of the art private university has successfully organised a dinner to re-launch their vision of delivering activity based learning, using the beast teaching talent to Ghanaians.
The university, with a passion for technology was established in 2009 and has since churned out graduates who are contributing significantly to the science and technology landscape of the country.
Attendees of the dinner, many of which are participants in the ongoing Ghana Tech Summit were hosted at the Kempinski hotel in Accra.
In an exclusive interview with Citi News, Chairman of the college, Dev Varyani highlighted the need to challenge the status quo when it comes to higher education in the country.
He observed that with the practical activity based learning encouraged at Academic city, students will be truly prepared to seek solutions to real life problems.
“I want to produce kids who have a balance outlook on life. That understand technology and at the same time are entrepreneurial. It’s not just technology at the book level. Its technology that is realistic that they can relate to and I want them to have a holistic view so they can go out there. They must be smart but they must also have the empathy to enhance the transformation that we’re starting,” he said.
The President of Academic City Dr. Fred McBagonluri called for a restructuring of Ghana’s educational to make the learning of science and technology attractive to women and girls.
This has become key in the midst of recent conversations aimed at finding new ways of making science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM] interesting to more females owing to the great strides made by the few women who are in it.
“I think we have to be deliberate about our educational system. I think we have to start at a very early age, putting together promotional programs that show the coolness of science and technology to women and girls in particular. I think we need a fundamental reconfiguration as parents, governments and societies in general. I think we should have special scholarship programs that help girls gravitate in that direction.” He said.
The dinner also served as an avenue for networking as local guests dialogued and shared ideas with international attendees of the first ever Ghana Tech Summit.
