The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has told Citi News that six persons have so far confirmed their intentions to contest for the party’s presidential ticket.

The party in a press conference last Thursday, August 2, lifted the ban on campaigning for all party leadership positions.

[contextly_sidebar id=”icFMo3yiJWEMjAwSu0LZ5fCcDD3o9PUE”]Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, Mr Asiedu Nketia said not all the hopefuls are frontline politicians.

“We have about six people who have written to us.  I can confirm that Dr. Ekow Spio-Gabrah has written to us, Professor Joshua Alabi, Sylvester Mensah was the first to write, and Stephen Atubiga. A couple of the people who have written to but they don’t appear to be in frontline politics.”

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah’s declaration of his intention to contest was followed up by similar declarations by Dr. Ekow Spio Garbah, a former Trade and Industry Minister under the John Mahama government and Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi.

The NDC on Monday, July 16 opened nominations for the party’s regional positions.

Last month, delegates of the party voted across the country to elect their constituency executives.

This forms part of the party’s process of electing national officers ahead of the 2020 election.

The areas the voted include Odododiodioo in the Greater Accra Region, Bimbilla in the Nanumba North constituency, the Ashanti Region and the Volta Region.

94 NDC MPs endorse Mahama

Ahead of the party’s polls, 94 NDC Members of Parliament out of 106 have reportedly endorsed John Dramani Mahama to lead the party in the 2020 elections although the former President hasn’t formally thrown his hat into the race.

According to the leader of the 94 MPs, Edwin Nii Lantey Vandapuye, John Mahama is the only candidate who can lead the party to victory in the next polls.
