The Ministry of Interior has expressed its commitment to ensuring discipline within the Ghana Police Service.
At the opening ceremony of the Ministry’s midyear review, Deputy Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, mentioned that it was about time recalcitrant police personnel are made to face the full rigours of the law.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Lte613LqBix7mYpV32tkVAoS8iUftHAB”] “The attitudes of some personnel in Ghana have attracted negative reportage. It brings into the focus, the training of our personnel. The plenary processes initiated must be pursued to their logical conclusions, and the appropriate sanctions imposed.”
In May 2018, 46 Ghanaian police personnel on UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan were brought back home for alleged sexual assault.
Fourteen of them were subsequently interdicted after preliminary investigations.
But Mr. Quartey said the Ministry, together with the Police Service, is considering amending its current Constitutional Instrument (CI) to cater for sexual violations.
“The Ministry of Interior and the Ghana Police Service are looking at the Constitutional Instrument (CI) to amend and include sexual offences to guide its service”.
7 suspected robbers gunned down, woman assaulted
The Police service continues to court public notoriety over various acts of indiscipline.
The killing of seven persons, tagged by the police in the Ashanti Region as suspected robbers, sparked protests in Kumasi and public outrage across the country with many people raising doubts about the police’s claims.
An independent Committee was subsequently formed to probe the incident.
While they struggled to deal with the issues in Kumasi, the police’s declining public image took yet another hit.
There was outrage after a video went viral on social media showing a police officer on guard duty at Midlands Savings and Loans beat up a woman who was holding a baby.
The officer, Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor, who assaulted Patience Osafo has been arrested and arraigned while the victim has received a large compensation package from the Savings and Loans company.
