At least two persons have sustained cutlass wounds following clashes between two Muslim factions in Nandom in the Upper West Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when some youth from one of the factions marched to prevent a marriage ceremony involving their daughter and a member of a rival faction.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QJi7kaFR62AZx5hd7c0JLEUYtov0mCFR”]The situation has heightened tension in the community as residents fear reprisal attacks.

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service are currently in the community to calm the situation, but no arrests have been made yet.

The two factions have been feuding over the last two years because of the selection of a leader for the central mosque in Nandom.

Other clashes

Apart from this incident, there have been other clashes that have been recorded in the region.

In May 2018,  at least two people were reported dead after clashes between police and youth in Tumu, the capital of the Sissala East district of the Upper West region.

The angry youth besieged the police station destroying vehicles and other properties belonging to the police service.

An eyewitness, Mohammad Basugu, told Citi News the situation had created tension in the town.

“Some of them made their way towards the dam, to avoid being arrested.

In the process, one of them drowned, and they accused the police of having caused the death of the person.
