Police in the Eastern Region has arrested five suspects who are alleged to be leaders of a car snatching syndicate operating within Somanya and its environs.
The Police made arrests were made following a tip-off.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said the police are making arrangements to prosecute the suspects who are currently in police custody.
“Their modus operandi is to steal the vehicles, respray and offer them for sale on the market for potential buyers at cheap prices.”
The first suspects arrested were Abadji Tetteh, 42, and Kojo Solomon, 24, both drivers at Somanya, who later assisted the police in arresting a 22-year-old scrap dealer, Latif Alhassan at Ashiaman Middle East.
Latif Alhassan is believed to buy the stolen vehicles for as low as GHC 2,000 and GHC 3,000 and later sell them to Francis Sam, a driver at Weija who prepares the cars for spraying to change their identities.
“In total, we have five persons who are in our custody, including a sprayer who normally does the respraying and they are assisting us with our investigation, and when we conclude, we will arraign them before the court and have them prosecuted,” DSP Ebenezer Tetteh stated.
