KNUST: Student leader accuses security personnel of intimidation

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Parliament has urged the school’s management to sanction the security personnel allegedly caught on video assaulting some students.

The Speaker of the KNUST Parliament, Frank Blay complained that students are uncomfortable around the security personnel on campus.

“They should be apprehended because assault is a crime. We all know that assault is a crime. Sometimes when state institutions embark on some of these reckless acts of lawlessness, they are punished by the state institution authorities.”

Mr. Blay also accused the school’s Students Representative Council of doing nothing to seek justice for the affected students.

The students were said to have been at the Royal Parade grounds singing in the traditional ‘gyama’ fashion when the security guards confronted them.

“In the process, the security people just attacked them. They descended on the guys, and they started beating them, hitting them with sticks in this 21sth century. Surely speaking, we feel intimidated,” Mr. Blay said.

In addition, he said the security exhibited some bias against students from the University and Unity Halls, known as Katanga and Conti respectively.

“When they are even talking to you, and they realize you are a continuing student, they shout at you. When they realize you are from Unity Hall or [Africa] Katanga hall, the kind of utterances that comes from their mouth really shows that they have been given some authority from the university authorities.”

Efforts to reach authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
