The Ghana Tourism Authority has called for the demolition of Bula Spot, a popular spot in the New Juaben Municipality which is being operated as a brothel at Koforidua Nsukwao.
On Saturday, police in Koforidua carried out a swoop at the popular joint where 12 individuals including the owner of the facility were arrested for operating an illegal facility.
The 11 other suspects, 6 men and 5 women, were also picked up by the police at the facility for soliciting for sex.
A visit to the place revealed close to 18 makeshift structures, designed as cubicles in which the alleged sex workers carry out their trade.
The occupants of the 18 wooden structures share 3 bathrooms. The congestion and poor electrical works at the facility makes it difficult for proper ventilation.
Naked live electric wires are seen hanging within the rooms with traces of illegal connection.
Maame Akos, a caretaker who also operates a drinking spot within the premises escaped Saturday’s swoop by the police, but told Citi News the sex workers make a Gh¢ 30.00 payment to management daily.

According to the Regional Manager of the Ghana Tourism Authority Frederick Adjei-Rudolph who was surprised a structure like that existed in the regional capital, called for its immediate demolition.
“My concern is that by the criminal code it is illegal to operate a brothel in Ghana and the police deals with that but when it comes to the Ghana Tourism Authority any illegal accommodation facility is not supposed to operate. What is happening here is that the kind of construction that has gone on here is very dangerous, makeshift plywood has been used to demacate an open environment and electrical wiring has been done in a way that in case there is any problem the whole of this facility will be razed to the ground and only God knows the kind of damage to life and property”.
“What is really shocking is that I never knew something like this is existing in Koforidua because we thought that the New Juaben Municipality is decent when it comes to the use of accomodation facilities and when my attention was drawn to this and I came to see for myself I have been very surprised”.
“We are determined to close down the place which has been done by the police, but the Ghana Tourism Authority is determined to collaborate with the police for the necessary legal regimes to take place so that anyone found culpable in operating this illegal facility is dealt with according to law”.
He also called for the demolition of the facility to deter the owner from coming back to operate it as a brothel.
“One other thing I am pushing for is that this structure is dangerous and from experience, if this structure still exists the tendency of the owner operating it again is very high so I am going to engage the police so that a court order is given to demolish the facility”.
Frederick Adjei-Rudolph however cautioned patrons and travellers to be weary of the kind of facilities they patronise in the name of saving cost.
“I am sure people who patronise these structures are mostly adults and others are under age, I just want to sound a note of caution to people that there are certain activities that we undertake that are illegal if you do it and you are caught you will be frowning against the laws of the country so they should desist from patronising places like this because it’s dangerous”.
