The Member of Parliament for the Savelugu Constituency in the Northern Region, Mohammed Abdul Samed Gunu, continues to distribute furniture and exercise books to a number of schools in his constituency.
He has so far distributed a large consignment of exercise books and dual desks to some selected basic schools including Yoo Roman Catholic Primary and Junior High Schools in the Savelugu Township.
The MP, who is worried about education infrastructure deficit in his constituency is spending a chunk of his share of the District Assembly’s Common Fund to fix the myriad of problems in that regard.
Hon. Samed Gunu told Citi News that, “The decision to donate exercise books and classroom furniture to pupils and schools in this constituency is in fulfillment of my campaign promise to the people of Savelugu”
“Education is very key and high on my agenda as the Member of Parliament of the area, and so I’m working hard to address many of the issues that are impeding progress in the educational sector.”
He mentioned that “About 7,000 pupils in all the primary schools in the Savelugu Municipality will be given exercise books, whereas 300 dual desks will be distributed to all Junior High Schools which lack furniture.”
The Savelugu legislator encouraged students of the beneficiary schools to avoid social vices that could ruin their future.
He underscored the need for students there to take advantage of the free Senior High School programme and acquire higher academic laurels.
He reaffirmed his pledge to organize free holiday extra classes for all junior high schools in the Savelugu Municipality.
He promised to double his support to needy but brilliant pupils in the area to aspire to be responsible citizens.
“I’m also supporting needy students in various tertiary schools at different levels to pay their school fees. Last year, I supported about 150 students and this year I am supporting a number of them to enable them to pay up their fees.”
“Normally, the support is given to only first-year students but due to the economic situation of parents of continuing students, I decided to add continuing students as well.”
Flood victims support
In a related development, the Savelugu MP presented used clothes, mosquito nets, life jackets and other valuables to flood victims seeking refuge in some classrooms.
According to him, 10 households in the Bagzuo community submerged following the heavy rains coupled with the Bagre dam spillage.
“Victims of the flood had to take over a whole school and spend their nights in the classrooms. Thank God for World Vision, UNICEF and Care International who intervened to provide them with temporary accommodation so that schools can be in session,” he narrated.
