President Nana Akufo-Addo says he is impressed with how the double track system has taken off within selected senior high schools across the country.
He says despite the initial challenges; the policy has been well accepted.
Speaking at a meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York, Nana Akufo-Addo said the double track system has been a good one.
“Government so far has worked very well. The first stream which is the green stream has taken off successfully. And in November, the yellow stream will also go and it seems to have gone on very well.”
President Akufo-Addo hailed the Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the Deputy Minister for Education in charge of General Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum for the roles they played in ensuring that the double track system is rolled out as planned.
“So for that, I’m very grateful especially to Matthew Opoku and Dr. Yaw Adutwum; the two ministers who have been shepherding this whole process,” he added.
About double track system
The implementation of the double track system in some 400 Senior High Schools in Ghana began on September 11, 2018.
The new system, which was created due to an increase in enrollment is expected to create space to accommodate more students, reduce class size, increase contact hours and increase the number of holidays.
The government adopted the double-track system to cater for increased enrollment under its flagship free Senior High School programme, due to a deficit in infrastructure.
But critics including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have bashed government over the programme.
They claim the government should have expanded or built school projects instead of implementing the double track system.
Double track won’t destroy education system
President Akufo-Addo had earlier said his government will ensure that the double track does not destroy the country’s educational system as being speculated.
“The double-track system will not destroy our educational system as the professional Jeremiah’s would want you to believe,” he said.
