Member of Parliament (MP) for the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region has pledged to invest and prioritize the education of pupils and students within his constituency.
According to Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the country needs the next generation of Ghanaians to be well educated to compete in the world.
He said it was difficult to achieve meaningful economic growth without an educated population.
The Manhyia South MP made the remarks when he donated a total of 22,400 reading books to 14 Junior High Schools(JHS) within his constituency.
The schools were also provided with cupboards for the proper storage and safekeeping of the books.
The gesture was part of an annual event where the Manhyia South legislator donates learning materials, sports kits, ICT labs, computers, uniforms and furniture to schools within the area.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh indicated that his focus on quality education for his constituents was not because he is the Minister for Education, but a leader who was committed to grooming the next generation of Ghanaians to contribute their quota to Ghana’s economic development.
“This is to provide what I think is the essential toolkit for the students and pupils in Manhyia, that will bring prosperity in their hands. Giving their parents money will not have an impact as educating their kids. For us, donating books or reading, fit into a lot of Government policies in my understanding. This is not the first time I am doing this. I am not doing this because I am the Minister of Education, I am doing this as a Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency which I see as my number one obligation to improve Education in my constituency”, he explained.
Ensure proper management of books
The Kumasi Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service(GES), Mrs. Martha Owusu Agyeman lauded the MP for the gesture and urged teachers of the beneficiary schools to manage the books and other items donated to them properly.
She said her outfit will supervise the schools to ensure the books are put to proper use.
“These days, you know with the coming of phones and television our children do not like reading. If you want to become a good scholar, you can’t do without reading. So we will go round and ensure the books are used for the intended purpose”, she said.
Teachers of the beneficiary schools thanked the MP for the donation and also pledged to do their best to keep the books safe for the pupils.
The MP also commissioned a borehole for the provision of potable water for the domestic use of his constituents.
He has absorbed the cost of maintenance of the facility.
