Member of pressure group, Occupy Ghana, Sydney Casely-Hayford, says he does not find anything wrong with the setting up of a National Cathedral in Ghana.

“I think there is nothing wrong with the National Cathedral project, if the Muslims also feel that they should have  a national mosque,” he said on The Big Issue on Saturday.

Sydney also called for the establishment of a national monument for cocoa and gold.

To him, Ghana’s success story is hinged on three pillars which are religion, cocoa and gold, saying “there is absolutely no reason why we can’t build national monuments for gold and cocoa too.”

“Why don’t we have a museum that shows how gold is extracted and melted?  It doesn’t make any sense to talk about tourism when you cannot show off the key ingredients of your country,” he added.

Background

Plans by government to establish a national cathedral in Accra has dominated major discussions in the last few days.

The issue has received varied opinions following government’s plans to evict some nine judges from the land earmarked for the project.

Some groups and individuals have kicked against the eviction of the judges and had urged government to either relocate the yet-to-be-built cathedral or halt the project.

Inusah Fuseini, MP for Tamale Central on The Big Issue said the project should be relocated because it is likely to worsen traffic congestion in the capital.

Although government says the project will be funded by private institutions, some Ghanaians are skeptical about the assurance and have asked government to prioritize other important projects in the country.

Majority of Ghanaians support National Cathedral project – Hadzide

Also speaking on Citi TV/Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue, Deputy Information Minister, Pius Hadzide said only a few people are kicking against the national cathedral project since to him, majority of Ghanaians are in support of it.

“It is my understanding that the National Cathedral was the president’s idea. Our understanding is that it has the support of a majority of Ghanaians but there are a few who disagree and we are ready to listen to these people,” he added.
