The immediate-past National Democratic Congress (NDC) Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo, today cast his vote in support of the creation of the Western North Region.

Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo is part of the 501, 306 voters expected to cast their vote in the 1,001 stations opened across the nine constituencies in the Western North area.

As at 7:20 am, 30 people had cast their votes at the Nakams School polling station in Sefwi-Wiawso out of 832 expected voters at that polling station.

Speaking after voting at the Ewiase DC Primary Polling station at Sefwi-Wiawso, Mr. Aidoo said both the NDC and NPP are united on the Western North region referendum largely because of the location of the current Western Regional Capital of Sekondi-Takoradi which is about a four-hour drive from the Western North.

Voting underway

He explained to Citi News that he considers the referendum as non-political, “Both NPP and NDC formed a joint committee from the Aowin area to Sefwi-Wiawso here, we went round to educate our people for the region. The whole thing is about the citing of the regional capital.”

“Around 1960, we had one region being Central Region but when it was separated to form the Western Region, the regional capital was given to Sekondi which was also close to Cape-Coast.”

“So if you look at Bia East and Bia West as well as the Sefwi area, it has been very difficult to access facilities like the regional Hospital at the regional capital of Sekondi. I have personally in my previous speeches called for the creation of a new region for the Western Region hence today we are focused on getting the 50 percent total votes and the 80 percent YES votes.”

So far, the Western North referendum has been peaceful, and the Western Regional Police Command has also detailed 250 police personnel to ensure Law and order for the referendum.
