The 18-year-old traditional priest who was initially denied admission into the Dzodze-Penyi Senior High School in the Volta Region because of a ‘sacred’ cap he wears, has been allowed to start his secondary education at the school.
Galley Felix has been wearing a blue cap on his head for the past 13 years because he was installed as the Togbui Tueve Awunyo II of Ative in the Ketu North Municipality.

Togbui Tueve Awunyo had explained that taking the cap off would invite misfortune on his community.
“I could go mad and many things could happen to my community if I remove my cap in public. I have been wearing this [cap] for 13 years and no one has asked me to remove it because they know the ramifications.”
Mr. Matthew Troha, headteacher of Dzodze-Penyi Senior high school explained to Citi News that “the school has codes of conduct which include dress codes thus for the 18-year-old priest to be allowed to come to school in his headgear, he would have to follow a procedure in seeking permission.”
Even though the headmaster did not suggest a solution to Togbui Tueve Awunyo II when he first reported to the school, he encouraged him to write to seek permission saying “it is in our interest to see everyone of school going age in the classroom”.
Togbui Tueve Awunyo II expressed gratitude to Citi News and the public for intervening.
He said because he suffers a disability with his right hand, education remains his surest way to making a living.
