The Ghana Armed Forces is set to launch an official investigation into the Tuesday evening fire at the Base Ammunitions Depot at Michel Camp.
The fire caused some small explosions and launched some debris from the camp’s armory into nearby residential facilities.
Though the fire did not spread to critical areas in the armory, the danger was still enough to prompt the evacuation of nearby homes and patients in a hospital early on Wednesday.
The Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, the Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Obed Akwa and other senior army officers visited the depot to inspect the extent of damage as well as ascertain the cause of the fire.
Lt. General Akwa addressed the press shortly after the visit, and assured residents that the worst was behind them as life returns to normal following the early morning scare.
“As at now, everything is under control. There is no threat to the people living within this settlement… the destruction is serious; but we don’t expect any escalation of the situation.”
He also warned residents that “if they should come across any foreign object, they should not touch it.”
Lt. General Akwa also said he expected the findings of the investigations to be ready in a couple of weeks.
“A major investigation is going to be conducted into this incident, and that is going to be immediate and within the next couple of weeks, we shall come out with our findings and any measures we need to take to prevent this occurrence.”
