The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives and journalists, has condemned the killing of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, an investigator with Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI.
Ahmed Hussein-Suale known for his work in the Tiger Eye PI investigative piece on corruption in Ghana football was shot dead the night of Wednesday, January 16 by unidentified assailants in Accra.
According to the IPI, the Ghana’s government must as a matter of urgency investigate, his killing and bring his killers to face justice.
[contextly_sidebar id=”oTlBL3ZikoBPqidyG9p9SDhlK9flvGhp”]In a statement signed by the IPI Director of advocacy, Ravi Prasad, he said the brutal murder of Hussein-Suale underscores the dangers corruption fighters in Africa are faced with in their line of work.
“The brutal murder of Hussein-Suale underscores the grave danger that journalists, especially those who tackle corruption and abuse of power, face in their line of work… The government of Ghana must swiftly investigate this crime and bring the killers to justice.”
The IPI also disclosed that as many as six journalists were killed in Africa last year in connection with their work as impunity for crimes against journalists remained at “shockingly” high level.
According to an analysis of data collected by the IPI on the death of some journalists, investigation into cases of targeted killings of journalists are often slow and many of the perpetrators have not been brought to justice.
Outspoken Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who was captured on video last year inciting violence against the slain Ahmed Hussein-Suale has distanced himself from the death of the investigator.
According to the legislator, Ahmed Hussein-Suale is irrelevant to his life hence cannot fathom why people will link his death to him despite publicly inciting violence on him on national television.
Ahmed was allegedly shot dead in Madina on Wednesday night by two gunmen on a motorbike who shot into the car he was driving.
“This boy is irrelevant to my life. Why would I be stupid and order people to kill him looking at how far God has brought me? He has not offended me in anyway. They should look for those who may be behind this heinous act. This is just cheap propaganda.”
“I don’t live a low life. I am focused in everything that I do, that is why I am very loud when I am arguing. I don’t compromise on anything. Ahmed has not done anything to me because I am not part of the people he set up” he added.
The death of Ahmed Hussein-Suale has prompted many social media users as well as civil society to call for the country’s security agencies to pick up Mr. Kennedy Agyapong for his comments inciting violence against the murdered investigator.
‘I expect Police to bring Ahmed’s killers to book’ -Nana Addo
President Nana Akufo Addo has also condemned the killing of an investigator with Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI , Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the President said he expects the Police to bring the perpetrators of the act to book.
“I’ve learnt with sadness of the killing of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, an associate of investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas. I condemn the act unreservedly, and extend my condolences to his family. I expect the police to bring to book, as soon as possible, the perpetrators of this heinous crime. Once again, my heartfelt condolences,” said the President.
The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, speaking for government, also condemned the killing, saying the act must not be tolerated.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said the security agencies will intensify their efforts to bring the perpetrators to book.
