The bodies of  16 miners who lost their lives in the Talensi mine explosion have been released to their families for burial.

Bolgatanga Regional Hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Patrick Atobrah, who made this known to Citi News said the bodies were released after autopsies were conducted.

[contextly_sidebar id=”No7WGNOApujqsnnBuDlTqYrA3VNypex6″]He added that the other injured miners on admission are responding to treatment.

“By and large they [injured miners]are fine. They are twelve miners. Six at emergency and six at medical ward.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday near a Shaanxi mining site, killing 6 people instantly, and leaving several others hospitalized. The death toll increased later to sixteen.

Shaanxi Mining Company has however denied responsibility for the incident. It has blamed one Kwasi Bantama who also runs a mine site in the area for the incident.

The Talensi District Chief Executive, Christopher Boatbil, in a Citi News interview said the companies have already shut down in compliance with a Minerals Commission directive.

“Currently, we are certain that work has stopped at the mining site particularly with the companies that are involved. This is because the leadership of both Shaanxi and Kwasi Bantama’s group were taken into the custody of the police at the regional office,” he said

Gov’t suspends Chinese mining firm’s operations in Talensi

Government in 2017 temporarily suspended the operations of Shaanxi Ghana Mining Company Limited operating in Gbane in the Talensi District to allow for thorough investigations into the company’s underground operations, and the alleged death of about seven miners in the area.

The suspension was later lifted.
