Outspoken NDC Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, was on Thursday assaulted by some security personnel believed to be members of the SWAT team of the Ghana Police Service at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Mr. Sam George was seen in a video shouting at the security personnel in a parked vehicle, claiming they wanted to kill a man in his house.

It was during the exchange that one of the security men stepped out of the parked pick-up truck of security personnel to slap the MP.

He was then punched by another person in uniform suspected to be part of the security team.

The video circulating on social media indicate that the attack on the MP resulted in fisticuffs between the police and supporters of the NDC.

“This is so wrong, this is so wrong, but no matter how long, you kill a man in his own house ?” The legislator was seen exclaiming.

Reports indicate that the assault on Sam George is connected to the incident which occurred at the La Bawaleshie polling station constituency where some groups of persons were shot by unknown gunmen, disrupting the voting process.

Ayawaso by-election: Gunshots fired at La Bawaleshie Presby polling station

Some persons have been arrested by police following a shooting incident a polling centre a La Bawaleshie during the ongoing Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election.

There are unconfirmed reports that two persons were shot during the incident, with took place at the La Bawaleshie Presby School, which has two polling centres.

Citi News’ Eugenia Tenkorang who was at the polling station reported that the area as chaotic with people throwing stones gunshots was heard in the area.

Some men in black, with their faces covered and dressed in an intimidating manner, were also sighted on the scene.

She spoke to a man whose hands were covered in blood who claimed two persons had been shot.

He said one person had been shot in the arm and the other in the leg. Eugenia Tenkorang also said she saw a man who appeared to be injured being carried by another person.

Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election: NDC withdraws candidate from the race

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has withdrawn from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election following the shooting incident.

The party has also withdrawn its polling agents and observers from the area after consulting with its parliamentary candidate.

Some National Security Operatives are alleged to have fired gunshots at a polling centre at La Bawaleshie, injuring about six persons believed to be NDC supporters.

“In the circumstances, I have conferred with the parliamentary candidate and the leadership of the NDC. We have no option than to withdraw from the ongoing exercise,” the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, said to the press.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo said the party’s candidate, Delali Brempong, was being “held hostage” in the area.

He also said there was “serious intimidation” from national security operatives.

Withdrawal not official

Kwame Amoah, Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, has told Citi Newsthe NDC is yet to communicate the withdrawal officially to the Commission.

He also said the EC still considers that the NDC candidate is still in the race because they did not withdraw before the start of the poll.

“Once the name is the on the ballot paper, and he did not withdraw before the start of the poll, he is a candidate so obviously whatever vote that will be in his favour will be counted and announced.”

He, however, confirmed that the NDC has withdrawn it’s party agents from some polling stations.
