Huawei Ghana has rewarded 12 students and 3 instructors at the Huawei National ICT Training and Awards, which was held in Accra on February 13, 2019.
This comes after 3 students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology emerged as top best students from Africa in the global Huawei ICT Competition last year, 2018, which paved the way for more slots for Ghana in 2019.
“In 2018, Huawei introduced two flagship ICT-oriented initiatives to harness and develop Ghana’s ICT talents. These major programs were the Huawei ICT Competition and the Huawei National ICT Trainig Program. The Huawei ICT Competition is a global competition for universities and colleges students with ICT background… It also aims at promoting efficient mapping of talents supply and demand for a sustainable talent ecosystem,” said the CEO of Huawei Ghana.
This year, more than 500 ICT and engineering students from top universities in Ghana competed in the global ICT talent competition, with 12 students coming from KNUST and Accra Technical University excelling.
They were rewarded with prizes like Huawei smartphones, the Matebook, internship opportunities, a training trip to China and other capacity-development rewards.
The full list of awardees are: Dr Joseph Arthur (Honorary University Award), Sylvester Hatsu (Honorary University Award; Benedicta Fofo Doku (Best Female student, KNUST); Anasthasia Blay (Best Female student, ATU); Joel Minnow (Best Male student, GTUC); Valentine Teye Borkor (Best Male student, ATU); Jordan Jnr Atta Nuako, Justice Owusu Agyeman and Kwasi Adu-Boahen Opare (Awards for excellent tutor).
The rest are: Dr Kwasi Opare (Award for Best Academy, KNUST); Vice-Chancellor of ATU (Award for Best Academy); Acheampong Michael, Osei Asante Dickson and Ansah Owusu Michael (3rd Prize Award); Joshua Ofori Boateng and Gerald Philip Bassah (2nd Prize Award); Seffah-Duodo Timothy (1st Prize Award).
The team that will represent Ghana at the Regional Commission was also revealed at the awards gala.
It had Joshua Ofori Boateng (Level 400, Telecom Engineering student, KNUST); Gerald Philip Bassah (Level 400, Computer Engineering student, KNUST); Seffah-Duodu Timothy (Level 400, Computer Engineering student, KNUST) and Dr Kwasi Opare (Snr Lecturer, College of Engineering, KNUST).
Huawei to be strategic partner for Ghana’s ICT Development
Over the next three years, Huawei has committed to training 1000 Ghanaians in ICT to help nurture talents in the country.
The first batch (30 trainees) was trained as Huawei Certified Network Professionals at the ICT Training Centre in Accra.
