Kwabena Adu Darko Asare has been crowned the winner of the 2019 and 12th edition of the National Spelling Bee contest.
He beat over 400 other students who went through intensive training and rigorous rounds of spelling and vocabulary testing to qualify as national finalists.
Kwabena, a student of DPS International will, therefore, represent Ghana at the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA.
Kwabena received a Ghc 5,000 scholarship from Indomie, a fully installed Explora Decoder with 6 months subscription from DSTV, a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online Dictionary some KFC vouchers among others.
This year’s competition which began in March of 2018, drew over 4,000 hopefuls for the coveted title of The Spelling Bee 2019 Champion.
History was also in this year’s competition because five deaf students from Tetteh Ocloo State School for the Deaf qualified as finalists as part of the organizer’s efforts at ensuring inclusive education.
Godsway Wadata, who was one of the top 5 Spellers, received Ghc 8,500 from Indomie, DSTV, GNTV Junior DPS Foundation and Young Educators Foundation.
The students come from the Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Western and Northern regions.
Ghana continues to be the only African country to participate in this international spelling competition.
Scripps Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee is a literacy programme that teaches children (ages 6-13) the rudiments of spelling and how to use the English language effectively.
Over 11 years, the programme has impacted close to 20,000 throughout the country.
In 2018, Miss Shifa Amankwa-Gabbey of Nagies Angels Educational Centre, became the first speller from Kumasi to emerge The Spelling Bee winner, much to the pride and delight of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Both leaders have honoured Shifa for her stellar performance in bringing honour to Asanteman and Ghana.
The Spelling Bee is sponsored by Indomie Noodles with support from Multichoice Ghana, PAS US Embassy, Rufus Green Parks, South African Airways, Voltic Mineral Water, Blue Knights Bookshop, KFC Ghana, Akai House Clinic, Samartex, B&FT, Citi TV, Joy FM and GN TV Junior.
