Aspiring presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Goosie Tanoh, has visited and sympathized with persons who were allegedly attacked during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election last Thursday.
Goosie Tanoh, who was among notable personalities who first condemned the incident, donated consumables and an undisclosed amount of money to the victims currently receiving medical treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
Goosie Tanoh, in a statement to the victims, read on his behalf by his Greater Accra Regional Campaign Coordinator, Mawuyram Asai, called for a swift investigation and the prosecution of perpetrators of the inhumane acts.
The presidential aspirant expressed worry for Ghana’s future democracy, peace and security following the attacks.
He said the country’s democracy will be under threat if such acts of lawlessness are allowed to continue without severe punishment.
He added that on a scale of one to ten, he would “rate the incident at Ayawaso West Wuogon nine” in terms of the level of concern.
Violence marred last Thursday’s election at Ayawaso West Wuogon with reports indicating that several people were injured in the clashes while gunshots were heard at the La Bawaleshie polling centre.
The heavy presence of security at polling stations for the by-election was a point of worry for some observers including the UNDP and the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) who raised concerns of the intimidation of voters.
The NDC withdrew from the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election following the shooting incident and ordered its polling agents and observers out of the area.
The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, was also at the wrong end of some security personnel as he was seen being struck in the face by two security personnel in a viral video.
Goosie Tanoh seen by political pundits as one of the favourites in the February presidential primaries of the NDC, assured the shooting victims “you can be sure that we are joined in the fight against political violence wherever and from whomever it originates from. We will not rest until all forms of violence and vigilantism are rooted from our National political life.”
“We at team Goosie 2020 and Organising for Ghana stand with you and your family at this time of your injury and distress. Your bravery and commitment as a citizen first and as a party member of our great party is exemplary. Please accept our best wishes for a speedy recovery”.
Goosie Tanoh stressed that his campaign team “will continue to fight a fair fight and are resolute in standing up to bullies, thugs and hired guns through the mobilization of the popular will and opinion for peace and security in our land.”
Goosie Tanoh also made a similar donation to 38-year-old Christopher Ablorde Ahiave whose house was completely reduced to ashes in a fire outbreak last Monday.
Christopher, his wife and three children are currently homeless.
Speaking to the press after receiving the donation from campaign team of Goosie Tanoh, Mr. Ahiave appealed for support.
He indicated that the National Disaster Management Organization ( NADMO) has turned deaf ear to his plea for support.
