Each Friday on Breakfast Daily, Citi TV highlights talented individuals and experiences that inspire and motivate people.
Last week’s Discovery of the Week was Reuben Atsu Anani, a visually impaired graduate of the University of Ghana and founder of the Humble International Band, a vibrant musical band made up primarily of disabled members.
Born to a family of 10, Atsu’s teacher realized that he and his brother were struggling with their vision in their early days in school and recommended they attend a school for the blind.
This news almost broke Atsu who did not want to depend on others to perform his daily activities like walking.
He gradually accepted that life could still be beautiful but faced another test of life when his parents passed away and he was left to look after himself.
At the University of Ghana, Atsu faced an equal amount of discrimination and admiration from his peers, he humorously narrated an instance where a school security guard criticized him for walking with his blind friend when they got lost and needed help finding their way.
A self-taught pianist, Atsu believes that individuals from economically deprived homes might not have any say in where they are born but have a responsibility to rise out of it.
Atsu’s life is a living example of this.
From University, Atsu couldn’t find work, instead of giving up and looking down on himself, he decided to create the Humble International Band to recruit other individuals living with disabilities.
