The Police in Kpando are searching for the mother of a day-old girl who was abandoned in a public latrine in Sovie in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region.
According to a local reporter, Ebenezer Dordzi, a woman who visited Sovie E. P Primary school to meet the headmaster of the school, heard the cry of a baby from the pit and drew the attention of the head teacher and some students who helped in rescuing the baby, bathed it and sent her to the Margarette Marquette hospital in Kpando.
The police command said the baby has been handed to the social welfare department while the police continue to search for the parents.
Meanwhile, the Social department is calling on the public to come to the aid of the young girl while her parents are still at large.
Last year April, a 26-year-old woman was sentenced 24 months in prison with hard labour for dumping her day-old baby daughter away onto a refuse dump.
The baby was found dead at the dumpsite with part of her body eaten by pigs.
The woman, Comfort Asor, also known as Ataa Panin, unemployed, pleaded guilty with an explanation.
Prosecuting, Police Detective Inspector Isaac Owusu Achaiw said, on April 15, 2017, at about 7:30 pm, the Kade District Police command received a call that a body believed to be of a day-old baby, had been found dead on a refuse dump at Akyem Abodom
Investigations revealed that on April 13, 2017, at about 6 am, the accused who was pregnant went to deliver at the maternity home of one Ellen Amposah, a traditional birth attendant at Abodom.
After the traditional birth attendant had discharged the accused, she concealed the baby and dumped it on a refuse dump.
