The Minority caucus in Parliament wants the police to arrest security officials who assaulted some of their supporters last week during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
According to the Minority, its members will embark on a series of democratic actions if the police fail to meet their demand.
The Minority has said they are holding the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Akufo-Addo responsible for the violent acts that occurred during by-election.
The Minority made the call on Tuesday when its members marched to the Police Headquarters in solidarity with the Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George who was also beaten on the day.
Chief Whip Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who spoke to the media after having separate meetings with top officials of the police, said they were unhappy that no arrests have been made since the incident.
“We are outraged that five clear days after the attack on our colleague and other victims who were well captured by the media, not a single arrest of those known bandits have been arrested. The minority holds President Nana Akufo-Addo as Commander-in-Chief and chairman of the Security Council fully responsible for the bloodbath especially.”
“The Minority serves notice that we shall roll-out series of further action until a national enquiry is commissioned and until the perpetrators are brought to justice. It is our hope that by next Tuesday we will get some concrete steps and action from the police failure of which we will come back here to continue the demand for justice,” Muntaka added.
The Minority in Parliament earlier in the day walked out of Parliament in protest of the swearing in of the newly elected MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
MP for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George and some NDC party members were beaten by National Security personnel last Thursday during the by-election.
“In commiseration to support our comrades and citizens that were unnecessary hurt and brutally assaulted, I am sorry to say we cannot indulge in this. Our side of the house cannot be here to witness this swearing in,” the Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak said on the Floor of the House before they walked out.
Some also held up placards with the inscription “bloody widow,” in reference to the confusion and the brutalities meted out to some civilians by National Security personnel during the by-election.
The swearing-in of Lydia Seyram Alhassan was done in the absence of the Minority.
