Government has condemned the act of violence perpetrated by some youth at Salaga in the Savannah Region.
The angry youth on Tuesday burnt down the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) office in the area in protest of the announcement of Damango as the capital for the Savannah Region.
According to the residents, they were expecting Salaga to be named as capital for the new region.
They also alleged that they had been promised by President Akufo-Addo that Salaga will be capital of the new region.
They said the promise was the basis upon which they went out to massively vote in last December’s referendum to endorse the creation of the new region and feel betrayed by the government’s decision not to name the area as capital.
The Minister of Regional Reorganization and Development, Dan Botwe while delivering an address at the presentation of the Constitutional Instrument for the creation of the Bono East region on Wednesday said he was optimistic the law will deal with those found culpable.
“We witnessed yesterday, after a beautiful program the act of lawlessness in Salaga. We condemn this. We are told that about 7 people have been arrested and they are looking for the others and it is our firm belief that the law will deal with such people,” he said.
The suspects were picked up by the police in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Salaga upon intelligence.
The Police in the region are currently investigating the incident.
Police moved in during the protests and succeeded in preventing the youth from burning down the District Assembly building as well as the DCE’s bungalow.
Police also managed to bring the situation under control, and a police reinforcement team had been deployed to Salaga from Tamale.
Police also urged the people of Salaga to remain calm and not to take the law into their own hands and help in identifying more suspects.
