The people of Nkwanta in the Volta Region are hopeful that their town will be declared as the regional capital for the newly created Oti Region.
Of the eight districts located in the Oti enclave, residents in five of the districts say they are hopeful their areas will be named the regional capital.
The Chiefs and people of the Oti enclave will be at the presidency on Friday where the President will be presenting the Constitutional Instrument, the legal backing for the creation of the new regions.
Ahead of Friday’s meeting some of the natives of Nkwanta in an interview with Citi News commended the President for creating the new region and subsequently called on the President to consider Nkwanta as the regional capital.
“We sincerely thank the President of the Republic and the Government at large for their initiative that they have created regions including Oti region. Now that we are waiting for the regional capital to be announced, we hope that we will be the town that will be mentioned as the regional capital…” one resident said.
Another resident said: “We are waiting for the announcement of the regional capital, and now that the Government is coming to make that announcement, we are expecting that the places that are qualified as the regional capital will be made the regional capital. We in the Oti region, we are also ready for any place that will be given the regional capital.”
Nalerigu selected as capital of newly created North East Region
Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has been selected as the capital of the North East Region.
This was announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo at a ceremony at the Jubilee House to present the Constitutional Instrument backing the creation of the region.
Nalerigu and Walewale were the two towns most vocal about hosting the capital of the new region.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed has also been named the caretaker Minister of the region which has an estimated population of 440,000.
The districts making up the new region are the East Mamprusi Municipality, the West Mamprusi Municipality, the Bunkprugu-Nakpanduri District, the Yunyoo-Nasuan District, the Mamprugu-Moagduri District and the Chereponi District.
Gov’t projects will be equitably shared among regions – Nana Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo has assured that government projects will share projects equitably across the various regions, including the newly created ones.
The President gave the assurance at a ceremony held at the Flagstaff House to present the Constitutional Instrument backing the creation of the North East region.
“I want to assure residents of the [new] region that government projects and structures will be equally transferred across the regions,” said the President.
