The Managing Director of Citi FM and Citi TV, Samuel Attah-Mensah has called on Ghanaians to support government’s free Senior High School (SHS) program to make it successful.
He said Ghanaians must rally together to help address the pertaining challenges of the program.
Speaking at the 60th-anniversary celebration of Swedru Senior High School over the weekend on the theme, “Ensuring quality secondary education through free SHS, our collective responsibility,” Mr. Attah-Mensah said the program has already achieved significant results in increasing access to education at the high school level.
While noting that cost remains a major impediment to access to education in the country, he said the free SHS program is commendable and must be supported to make it successful.
“I believe it seeks to address the challenge of equitable access by removing the greatest barrier to education which is cost. That is why the policy has already made such a difference in the lives of parents and families across the country. That is why I will join the call to all Ghanaians to support the government to address the challenges to this policy which we have identified in our national discourse,” he said.
The Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah who was also at the anniversary celebration reiterated plans by the government to end the recently launched ‘double track’ education policy.
He said the policy was only a stop-gap measure and became necessary due to the lack of adequate infrastructure for pupils.
The Minister, however, noted that due to the government’s efforts in making available more emergency infrastructure, the policy will end soon.
The Minister for Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh recently announced that the policy will end in six years’ time.
