Don’t attack our field workers – PDS appeals to Ghanaians

The Power Distribution Service (PDS) has urged the public to collaborate with its field workers when they engage on official duties.

The plea follows an attack on a PDS field worker who was working on a faulty line at Kokrobite in the Greater Accra Region by a resident.

Some parts of Accra in the past weeks have experienced power outages and residents in some of the affected areas have expressed frustrations with the situation.

The Public Relations Officer for the Accra West region of the PDS, Fred Baimbill-Johnson who narrated the incident to Citi News said the victim was attacked while on duty.

“Last Saturday, we had a call that some parts of Kokrobite had a power outage. So we went there to check what the problem was. While checking on the problem, we realized that a tree interfering with our lines. So our technical men went to cut down that tree. While they were cutting the tree they saw a man approach with a young girl and they told them not to come close because there were branches falling. So I think it didn’t go down well with him. So he got into an argument with the team and one of the cutlasses used to cut the tree, he took it and threw it. So while everyone was running, one of our technical men fell and he cut him while he was on the ground.”

“To us, what we are calling for is more collaboration. We’re asking the public to realize that we will want them to have more power . Such instances only make it certain rage and makes it difficult to go into the communities to work”, he added.

Recent Blackout

Over the past weeks, most parts of the country have been experiencing a blackout.

The imbalances and the resultant surge affected the Kpong Hydro station resulting in a shutdown and an automatic restart of the facility.

PDS, which recently took over power distribution from the Electricity Company of Ghana, has assured that it receives enough power to distribute to Ghanaians.

The Ghana Grid Company also apologised to Ghanaians and assured that it “will continue to work with all stakeholders to provide adequate supply to customers.”

Ghanaians continue to take to social media to comment on the current power situation in their respective areas.

Some social media users posted on the current power situation in their respective neighbourhoods.

The term ‘dumsor’ which refers to the intermittent power outage was featuring prominently in the Ghana Twitter trends.
