“We are told that, if we consider global water or the water on the planet today it is 100%, only 1% is fresh water so it means there is a need for us to protect it. That is the reason I say Operation Vanguard is doing well to me, because some years back we used to have a problem with our water quality at Bonsu and Brim River. But the result of Operation Vanguard around here has reduced the rate of pollution,” he said.
“There was a meeting at the regional office, last week where it was said drones were going to be deployed to monitor the galamsey activities,” he said
Operation Vanguard was launched on 31st July 2017. And it comprises officers from the military and police service tasked to prevent further pollution of water bodies and land degradation.
The Force was also set up to combat illegal small-scale mining also known as galamsey in the country.
Although the team experienced some setbacks a few months after it was formed, it has so far arrested close to 2,000 illegal miners.
‘Operations of the anti-galamsey task force.’
The anti-galamsey task-force was deployed to three regions; Ashanti, Western and Eastern, to help fight and sustain the campaign against illegal mining, which was started by Citi FM in 2017.
Their operations have resulted in the arrest of illegal miners including foreign nationals, mainly Chinese.
