Ghana and Philadelphia Union forward David Accam’s brace against Columbus Crew in Week 4 of the MLS regular season got him the best player award for the round.
Accam got his first start for Union this season in Saturday’s match and he was on hand to find two goals and an assist past his fellow Ghanaians, Jonathan Mensah and Harrison Afful, both of Crew to help Union win 3-0.
Accam revealed that his exploits was largely fueled by wanting to honour the memory of father who had passed on in the week leading to the match and he was pleased with his efforts against Crew.
“It feels great for me; lately I’ve been having a tough time on and off the field, so today is amazing to get my first two goals on a home game for the club.”
Aside from personal tragedy, Accam has had to deal with injury problems and after the match against Columbus Crew, Union head coach Jim Curtin said that the player had shown toughness to ride a such difficult period.
“We’re all rooting for David. He’s gone through a lot on the field, off the field, injuries, things he can control, things he can’t control. So for him to have a performance like tonight when we really needed it as a team was big time. He really stepped up.”
Union head to Cincinnati in the next round of the league on March 30 and Accam is expected to feature for the team as they seek to move upwards on the Eastern Conference table.
