The Ashaiman Polyclinic is a 40-bed capacity hospital which serves over 30,000 people within the Ashaiman Metropolis.
The polyclinic, however, lacks the basic equipment to efficiently and effectively to cater for the huge number of Ghanaians that frequent it on daily bases.
The polyclinic, according to the medical superintendent, is in dire need of assistance.
Speaking to Citi News after a donation by the Ghana Institution of Welding, Dr Mavis Oppong Addo noted that patients have had to be treated on benches due to lack of beds.
“Sometimes we have to resort to the joining of benches in taking care of patients due to the lack of beds and we believe these beds that have been donated will give the facility some respite as patients also get some comfort.”
The Ghana Institution of Welding which was established in 1996 is made up of Welders, fabricators, electricians and pipe mechanics. With its headquarters in Tema, the association has well over a hundred members.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, the association donated 20 locally made adjustable hospital beds valued at 60 thousand Ghana cedis to the Ashaiman polyclinic.
According to the President of the Association, Enuson Daniel Obeng “the association decided to donate to the Ashaiman polyclinic and other health facilities because we realise most of these health facilities have challenges especially with beds and so we came together to organize these locally made adjustable beds for them. These are beds we built on our own and given the opportunity, we shall build more to be supplied to hospitals nationwide”
Mr Enuson appealed to the government to stop importing such beds and engage the services of local welders to produce hospital beds.
Receiving the beds on behalf of the Polyclinic, the Medical Superintendent of the facility, Dr Mavis Oppong Addo noted that the presentation will bring relief to the hospital.
The Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman constituency, Ernest Henry Norgbey who was present at the event praised the association and promised to provide 20 mattresses for the beds.
