Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, on Thursday inaugurated three committees tasked with various responsibilities in the development of sports in Ghana.
The minister believes the inauguration of the various committee’s in geared towards “changing the phase of Ghana sports”.
The International Games and Competitions Committee, chaired by Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Prof. Peter Twumasi, will be responsible for the overall planning of Ghana’s preparations and participation in all international competitions.
The committee has also been tasked with the responsibility of providing advice to the government on all requests by local federations to host or participate in any international competitions.
The National Sports Policy Review Committee, chaired by Sports Business Consultant, Magnus Rex Danquah, will be responsible for reviewing all existing policies to come up with one policy document to “reflect existing international best practices in the development and promotion of sports”, the sports minister said.
In line of their work, they are expected to hold consultative forums to collate ideas in producing a new policy document.
The first ever sports policy document for Ghana was prepared in 1994 by then Sports Minister, ET Mensah. It was reviewed in 2006 by Yaw Osarfo Maafo, Sports Minister under the President Kuffour administration.
Meanwhile a Local Organizing C0mmittee (LOC) has also been put in place to supervise Ghana’s hosting of the 2019 International Table Tennis Federation and African Table Tennis Federation championship to be hosted in Ghana in April.
Ghana has been handed the mantle to host two major International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) tournaments in April. The two World Championships; the World Junior Circuit (WJC) and African Junior and Cadet Championship (AJCC), would take place in Accra from the April 1-5 and April 7 to 13, 2019 respectively.
